Industrial Unrest in Abu Dhabi - Case Study ExampleThe fact that the parties involved argon willing to come to the flurry and have a civil discussion is also very encouraging. This is a good indicator that the conflict will soon be put to rest. Willingness to address and negotiate is the first step to solving any conflict. There is quite a range of weaknesses in the labor environment in the Abu Dhabi as shown by several surveys some of which were sparked by the recent strikes by worker most of who are migrants. One thing that contributes to the weakened working conditions is that there seems to be a breakdown in communication between the employers and employees. Whether deliberate or not it is a major cause of employee unrest (Williams, 2014).The workers seem to think that their employees are insusceptible to their plight. There have been massive complaints about low pay and deplorable living conditions. The fact that the strikes caught the companies by surprise points to miscomm unication or a total miss of it. Workers claim that their wages have remained the same for a long time despite changes in the working and economic environment which puts them at a disadvantage. They are agitating for an appraisal of their salaries in order to afford to continue working. The low wages can be attributed to the fact that there is availability of cheap parturiency as if the was scarcity of labour these companies would pay better without the need for strikes. Workers here also complain of poor living condition with a majority claiming to go through in cramped spaces. Claims of six or more workers having to share living quarters are not uncommon. This they say they have had enough of hence the purpose to strike, illegal as this may be. There are quite a few opportunities for labor sector to thrive but they will call for major changes within the sector if they are to be achieved (International, 2013).

Critically evaulate the view that international organisations and Essay

Critically evaulate the view that inter subject field organisations and planetary governance systems be undemocratic - Essay ExampleIndeed, it is very much possible to see that world-wide institutions such as International Monetary Fund (IMF), World patois and World Trade Organisation (WTO) do play an active role in the governance, political and economic organisation of many countries from around the world. Importantly, the issue of shortfall of democracy primarily a parents from the fact that while the nation states are at least theoretically responsible to the national civil inn, the international institutions are accountable to none. All the nation states do not wield equal personnel in many of the transnational institutions. Moreover, if we look at the internal structure and power balance within, most of the international institutions are tilting towards the rich countries of the Global South. Global Institutions, Global Governance and Lack of Global Democracy The making o f accelerated globalization was characterised by the shift of governance from the national to the global. The nation state is being increasingly challenged by the forces of globalisation. At present, the democracy is solely expressed through national governments and their institutions. In other words, the national parliament is the only abode of democracy. However, the rise of international organisations has led to their growing clutch on the national economies, politics and policies. It is followed the rise of unaccountable forces of neoliberal capitalism which effectively surpass any idea of national and popular sovereignty. It has led to a kind of global elite integrating as there exists no world parliament. Still, the absence of world parliament does not automatically translated as the absence of global sovereignty. Global sovereignty certainly exists as the consolidated and concentrated power of global market forces and their institutions. It is primarily because of this lack of democracy within, the meetings of international finance and trade institutions attract huge defense from activists and political groups from around the world. The voting rights in a major institution such international monetary fund is based on proportional balloting wherein one country, one vote principle is not followed. On the contrary, countries get their voting rights based on their economic share in the institution. The United States in particular and the West in general are also able to exert disproportional influence in the decision making bodes of IMF and World Bank. atomic number 53 of the major problems with international governance organisations is that they do not directly draw their legitimacy form any popular sources. In other words, the legitimacy of the global institutions is solely depended upon their ability to intervene and act decisively in certain situations and places. Although, there is a lot of talk on the emergence of a global civil society which coul d effectively counter the lack of democracy in global governance institutions, nothing yet has materialised. Conversely, the so-called global civil society itself is predominantly dominated by many Non Governmental Organisations which are accountable not to the people but to the funding agencies. In the question of transparency too, the placement of global transnational organisations is not very different from the global finance or political institutions. Here, the very lack of representation of the voice of the developing

Assessing and Understanding the Foreign Exchange Market - Essay Example(Investopedia) Chinese foreign exchange market plays an fundamental occasion in the development of its economy. It is an in-chief(postnominal) source of enthronization and income in China. The Chinese foreign exchange market mainly deals in Chinese RMB Renminbi yuan. The basic flow of Chinese foreign exchange market is to conversion the currencies. For example in this market the U.S. dollars can be converted into Chinese RMB. Another important single-valued function of Chinese money market is that it facilitates international business transactions of China through the conversion of currencies. (Laura Acevedo) An important tool for stable economic growth is currency value and this market helps the central bank in controlling the value of its currency through buy and changeing. It is also a productive source of investment for the investors in China because if they a currency at a lower rate and due to fluc tuations in currency rate they argon able to sell it at a higher rate than this sure is a profitable investment. (Maps of World) Spot rate is the price that a buyer is ready to pay for buying a currency in terms of another currency. Chinese spot exchange rates are determined by the central bank. This determination by the central bank is based on a number of factors which include the buying and selling of Yuan in different exchange markets, the value of Yuan in term of other currencies- as this value keeps on changing the spot rate of Chinese exchange market also changes simultaneously. These rates are very important in the Chinese currency market as they are the current exchange rate on the basis of which the mean solar day to day transactions of the Chinese stock market take place. And without these rates no business is mathematical in this market. (Investopedia) Forward exchange rate is the rate at which a currency can be traded for one currency at a particular time in future. T his time ranges between two days to twelve months. China puts forward exchange rate reforms when necessary in order to maintain its social and economic stability. Forward exchange rate plays an important role in insuring foreign exchange risks because when a country enters in a transaction through forward exchange rate and in the meanwhile the exchange rates fall badly then the forward exchange rate act as insurance against unprofitable dealings. (Ozforex) One of the most important theories used for the determination of currency exchange rate is purchasing power parity theory (PPP). It is an economic theory that calculates the changes that are to be made in the currencies of two countries in order to make the difference between their exchange rates and their purchasing power equal. Mathematically this theory is represented as follows S=P1/P2 Here s is the exchange rate between the two currencies. P1 is the price of good x in country one and P2 is the price of good x in country two . This theory can be elaborated by an example that if a cold drink costs 1.50 Yuan in chinaware than it should be worth 1.00 us dollars if the exchange rate between U.S.A and china is 1.50 USD/RMB. This theory helps the economists in determining the standard of living in different countries. (Investopedia) It is possible that a currency may be devalued but the standards of living may remain high due the higher purchasing power of the people. approximately of the economists prefer purchasing parity concept in the calculation of GDP as countries like china intentionally understate their currency value which results in the understatement of GDP. Therefore mostly the GDP of different countries is calculated through purchasing parity approach. This theory also helps in the correction of trade

Lessons learned from the collapse of bear stearns Essay

Lessons learned from the collapse of bear stearns - Essay ExampleAll the major cause get out be expansively presented in this paper. The valuable lessons learnt from the crisis will also be thrown light upon in this paper. Bear Stearns, AIG, Lehmann Brothers, Northern Rock, Goldman Sachs are some elite names that suffered the most because of the economic crisis also known as recession. Lehmann brothers filed for bankruptcy while AIG and a few other elites just hung in in that respect with the flake of their teeth. This economic crisis is still having repercussions on countries like Greece and Spain the whole of Euro Zone is facing a pecuniary turmoil. There are a few other countries that start been not so severely affected by the same. The crisis triggered off because of unchecked debt, banks kept issuing loans to state who invested heavily in buying assets, several things were interpreted for granted but when proved otherwise there was hardly a place in the world to hide. Ove rvaluation in real estate is possibly the biggest cause of the current economic crisis, it is better known as the subprime crisis in the US. The likes of Lehmann Brothers and other financial services went bust because they kept issuing credit to the people who thought the property price would increase and they would be easily able to pay off the debt that they are borrowing. It did not turn out that way and there was a short of equity, this is exactly why the financial institutions went bankrupt. The overvaluation is the biggest factor that caused the current economic crisis. Factors like vainglorious income tax practices have added insult to injury, bad mortgage lending also contributed heavily to this current economic crisis. The way to address the root cause is to let house prices drop to where an average house is within the means of an average household. (Or, alternatively, boost the income of the average household to the point that they can afford an average house. But thats very hard. Letting houses prices go on falling, although painful for everyone who owns a house or who has lent money to someone who owns a house, is very easy.) (Root Cause of the Financial Crisis) Role of Monetary Policy slightly of the main plausible reasons that caused the upstart financial crisis have been identified in the above sections. consort to Brunnermeie (2009), cheap mortgage financing to sub-standard borrowers fuelled the boom in the U.S. housing grocery. Three factors were primarily responsible for the fall of the housing market in the U.S. (which in essence, constituted a very small segment of the financial market in the country) transforming into a global contagion. First, the originate and distribute banking model, together with the high rate of securitization, led to declining lending standards and made it impossible to re-price the complex structured products. This significantly eroded the confidence level of banks, thereby disrupting the inter-bank market s and credit flow. Second, banks relied heavily on short-term funding sources, hence raising the risk of funding. Finally, the ever-growing integration of global financial systems and the increasing interest towards structured financial instruments quickly transmitted the crisis to all the major regions of the world. Gourinchas (2010) focused on the role of monetary policy in the recent financial contagion as well as the role played by exogenous influences, particularly the rising external deficits referred to as Global Imbalances. According to Gourinchas, both explanations are not satisfactory as the sole

Introduction to Nursing research - Essay ExampleIn this context, research findings have demonstrated that the noticed genic conflict came about because of certain aspects of relationships between parents themselves, parents genes and their offspring. Meaning that mothers can contribute to this condition in case they are polyandrous, if they provide higher amount of biological resources to fetus as compared to fathers, and when there is extensive utilization of resources from the maternal as determined by the genes (which are pleiotropic) from both paternal and maternal. Looking at the full-page hypothesis therefore, very clear links are seen to be in existence between the general human mate and the eventual risk of create type 2 diabetes mellitus on the offspring. Petry C. J. and Seear R.V., et al (2011). Maternally transmitted fetal H19 variants and associations with birth weight. Hum componentt. 2011 Nov 130(5)663-70. Doi 10.1007/s00439-011-1005-x. Epub 2011 May 15. Pub Med PMI D 21573965. Literature review Insulin-like developing factor 2 and H19 genes are very close links and reciprocally imprinted. The Insulin-growth factor 2 encodes a fetal growth-factor while at the same while predominantly expressed from the paternal allele. According to Petry C. J. and Seear R.V., et al (2011) however, H19 which encodes a transcript that can down regulate cellular proliferation is expressed from the maternal allele. This study, hence, was carried out with a view of testing the hypothesis which has propagated an idea that polymorphic variation in maternally transmitted fetal H19 alleles has an association with offspring size during birth and changes in maternal glucose concentrations at the condemnation of pregnancy. Data collected showed that fetal rs2071094 allele that had its inheritance from the mother had influence on the increased birth weight that was fiddled with the maternalism of ages, sex and parities. On the contrary, no fetal alleles had any associat ions with the offsprings birth weight. After data collections and analysis, considerable consistencies with denting as a common polymorphic variation in fetal H19 alleles transmitted solely from the maternal have association with the birth weight and other attributing markers of offspring size at the time of birth. Tentatively, no associations exist between the polymorphic variation in H19 and significant alterations in the maternal glucose tolerance within the third trimester of mother pregnancy. How Do Maya Angelou and Grace Nichols Communicate What It Means to Be a Black Woman in Todays Society Essay Example for Free

How Do Maya Angelou and change Nichols Communicate What It Means to Be a Black fair sex in Todays Society EssayHow do Maya Angelou and lenience Nichols communicate what it means to be a raw woman in todays golf club? In this essay I will compargon two poetrys. The two songs I will comp ar is Maya Angelous Still I hold up to compassion Nichols Of course when they ask for poems closely(predicate) the realities of Black women. I approximate Maya Angelous Still in rise has a rather distinct communicate to dramatize Nichols poem. I think they be interesting to compare beca handling Maya Angelo is lively and spirited about writing a poem about how strong abusive women are and how it is to be a fatal woman in todays society. W here(predicate)as, benevolence Nichols is more than disgruntled and irritated about writing her poem. The first poem I will scrutinize is Maya Angelos Still I rise. The title Still I rise shows strength and optimism as it is a mulct exclusiv ely strong signification title. It means that Maya Angelou will always defend herself. It makes you looking at no matter what you do to Maya Angelou she will just get spine up again. This makes you believe that Maya Angelou is a strong person. In the first verse, Maya Angelou starts off using an inculpative tone when she says you may write me down in business relationship with you bitter, twisted lies. This gives the impression that she is talking to white concourse when she says this. I think this means she doesnt handle what white people have wrote in their memoir books about morose peoples past as it is over exaggerated and a lot of lies. Near the end of the first verse, she uses the simile and still bid dust, Ill rise. This is once again reinforcing the idea that she is a strong black woman.By using this simile she is as well equivalence herself and her belt along to dust and this suggests that you cant get loose of black people and that they are everywhere you go , as dust is hard to get rid of and it is everywhere as you cant control or capture it. In the second verse, Maya Angelou is more lively and spirited when she says Does my sassiness upset you? This suggests that she is getting more confident as she progresses through the poem. She also uses two rhetorical questions to grip the readers attention why are you beset with gloom? Also, in the second verse she shows more confidence when she uses the phrase cause I walk like Ive got oil fountainheads pumping in my living room. The use of informal language cause shows this. This phrase also makes me think that she timbres powerful, rich and important. In the third stanza, she uses a lot of similes such as Just like moons and like suns I think she has trust this simile in because it is natural run intory and she needinesss black people to be described as this because it is not barely a part of nature but the sun and moon are beautiful vital to the world. In the next class she continues w ith the natural imagery by saying With certainty of tides. This is also natural imagery as she is comparing the black guide with tides. I think she chose to use the natural imagery of tides here because not single is it once again vital to the world but it also creates a sense of power as tides and waves are incontrollable, powerful and aeonian and waves always come patronage so I think maybe she was also exhausting to reinforce the idea that she and her race are strong. However in the fourth verse, she stops using natural imagery and changes into an interrogative mode when she says did you want to see me broken?Bowed head and lowered eyes? here she uses negative lexis such as broken to create an image of a typical slave to the reader. I think she does this here as she wants to show people that herself and her race are not slaves and that you should not dwell on their past and think of them as slaves. In the fifth stanza, its more about her civilisation when she uses the sim ile cause I laugh like Ive got gold mines I think she is implying here that she is not rich in wealth but she is rich in burnish and in spirit.I think this changes the atmosphere to a more relaxed mood as she is embracing her culture. Also, when she says diggin in my own back yard it gives you a sense of black soulful language and reinforces the fact that she embraces her culture and language. However, in stanza six, it is a more harsh verse as she uses an accusatory tone once again. She creates an atmosphere of fury and annoyance by using onomatopoeia and harsh sounds such as garnish and kill. I think this was put in so people would remember the way white people treated slaves and how violent they were towards them.I think she is trying to give an insight of how it must have felt to be a slave and make people feel guilty for treating them so unfairly. At the end of this verse, she repeats herself But still, like air, Ill rise. I think she does this to not only make people belie ve she is a strong, black woman, but to also make the poem memorable for the reader and make it stand out. Also, when she uses the simile like air it makes you think that you cant hurt her because she is like air and you cant cut or hurt air.I think air was a true(p) simile to use here because air rises and I think Angelou was implying that she will rise above on the whole expectations people have for her, black women and black men. Also, by using the word air Maya Angelou is trying to indicate that herself and the black race are now free as black people are now free from slavery. In the seventh stanza, the atmosphere changes and you can see Angelous superbia in her culture and race. I think Maya Angelou is trying to create a varied image for black women as she says does my sexiness up set you? . This suggests that she is trying to make a new image for black women that is sexy and more elegant because before they were seen as only slaves. In the third and fourth line of this ver se, she says that I dance like Ive got diamonds, at the meeting of my thighs. By using the word diamond she is implying that black women are rare, precious and tough as those are the main characteristics of a diamond. I think she is suggesting black women should be treasured and kept safe as they are too precious to lose.In the last stanza, Angelou breaks free from the previous set structure of the quatrains and its a more symbolic structure it does not have a pattern to it. I think this is because it is supposed to imitate the slaves breaking free. Also, it has a random lay out and I think this is reinforcing the idea that you cant capture black people like slaves anymore and that black people shouldnt be treated unfairly anymore. The last verse also has more energy to it as it speeds up more.I think this is because when black people broke free from slavery they were lively and more spirited and had more pride in their culture and race. Also, in the last verse, Angelou uses metapho rs instead of similes now such as Im a black ocean, leaping and wide. I think she changes from similes to metaphors in this verse because she has gained more confidence and pride. It has also become a more happier, lively verse again as she uses more positive lexis such as daybreak and wondrously clear. This is because she is happy and royal of being black and wants black women and men to be perceived as happy and lively. She has not only broken free from the quatrains in this last verse, but she has also broken free from the AB rhyming sentences and is now using rhyming couplets as well as repetition of the words I rise, I rise, I rise to show confidence, power and pride of what it means to be a black woman. Overall, end-to-end the whole of the poem, I believe that Maya Angelou was trying to change the perception of black women and make black women feel as confident and as proud as Angelou does of being black. Throughout the poem Angelous tone differs. As in the beginning, although she started with an accusatory tone, she went on and used positive lexis such as hopes springing high this and so changed from a interrogative mood to a more lively and spirited atmosphere. However, as the poem continues she starts to use negative lexis again and the interrogative mode re-appears do the poem seem more harsh to the reader, although, when you read on the poem ends in a more lively and happier tone as she uses more compulsory phrases and starts to use metaphors rather than similes now Im a black ocean, leaping and wide.Angelous use of sound imagery is interesting as she makes the reader imagine not only pretty, natural images, but harsh, cruel images as well. For instance, Just like moons and like suns and Shoulders falling down like teardrops. I think she does this so we all can see what she wants black people to be perceived as and also what black people used to be perceived as. Overall, I think Maya Angelou wrote this poem to change the perception of black women in todays society. The second poem I will examine is Grace Nichols Of course when they ask for poems about the realities of black women. This is a poem with a slightly different message. Whereas, Maya Angelous poem was overall lively and spirited, Grace Nichols poem takes on a more sarcastic side of what its like to be a black woman, compared to a white woman, in todays society and how she feels about being asked to write a poem on what its like to be a black woman. The heading of Grace Nichols poem Of course when they ask for poems about the realities of black women shows a sarcastic side as she has put realities in inverted commas. This gives you the impression that she doesnt want to write this poem as black women are no different from white women or any other race. The first verse of the poem starts with what they authentically want at times is a specimen whose heart is in the dust. When she uses the word they in the beginning I think she is talking about white people, racists a nd those that misunderstand her race. Also, when she says the word specimen it makes you think of a different species something that needs to be studied. I think this is what she feels racists think of the black race. When she refers to whose heart is in the dust this makes the reader believe she thinks people pity her race. When she says a mother-of-sufferer she is referring to ancestors of slaves and this then links to trampled/oppressed which is the typical slave image. Shes is saying here that they, meaning white people or people that misunderstand her race, want a slave to write a poem about how it is to be a black person living in todays society. Grace Nichols then moves on and says they want a little black blood undressed and cogent evidence for the abused sort already in their heads. This means that racists want a black, vulnerable person to be proof for the typical slave image, thats a black stereotype, in their minds. When she says black blood she is implying that black pe ople are completely different to any other race and even have different blood, even though black people are no different from white people. She is also implying, when she says For the abused stereotype already in their head, that the stereotype has been put into peoples heads by white, biased history books. When she says, in the next verse, a perfect song she is referring to someone that is proud of their race and would like to write a poem about being black, for example Maya Angelou. Within the next few lines, Grace Nichols talks more about how not all black women are the same and how they cant be categorised. When she says I say I can write no poem big plentiful to hold the essence. This means she cant write one poem for black people or any other race as there are too many personalities and individuals to put them all into one category. When she says of a black woman or a white woman or a green woman she is then showing her sarcasm again when she says green woman as you cant have g reen women and what she is trying to say is that we are all equal . And there are Black women and Black women this is once again reinforcing the idea that there is not just the black woman. There are different types of black women and they are not all the same and are individuals. In the next line she uses a very good simile when she says like a contrasting sky of rainbow spectrum.I love this simile as she is saying that there isnt only one food color black and that when you put all the different colours together it makes something beautiful, such as a rainbow. She is also using natural imagery here and it makes you think of how special black people are to this world. As you go on in the poem, she uses the well known phrase dont judge a book by its cover very well as she says touch a black woman you mistake for a rock and feel her dissolve down to fudge.I think this is implying the phrase dont judge a book by its cover as it is saying if you ill-usage a black woman when you think she has thick skin she could really be vulnerable inside. In her poem, she does not only talk about different types of people and race, but she also introduces the fact of the different types of language. If need be well trade a piece-a-pussy. Here she uses her own language of Creole and mixes Caribbean face with English to create a sense of her own Caribbean culture and how proud she is to be black and have her own, unique culture. Also, during her poem, Grace Nichols refers to some famous black women as she says and there are black women so dangerous in South Africa they prison them away. Here she is talking about Winnie Mandela, Nelson Mandelas wife. She also refers to Maya Angelou throughout her poem as she says and there are black women strong and eloquent and focused. Here she talks about Maya Angelou and how proud she is of her race. However, at the end of the poem, she ends on a positive note as she says the twisted self-negating history weve inherited.I think this means ev en though they see their history as twisted and cruel, she wants black people to focus on the present and make their history better than that of the ancestors that were slaves. She also says crushing out with each dancing ill-use. This shows me that she wants to crush out their past history and therefore ends on a positive note. Overall, throughout the poem, I think Grace Nichols was trying to make black women proud of their culture and race and that they are no more different than white people or any other race.I think Grace Nichols didnt have a set structure for the poem as it is sporadic and a random layout. I think she did this because there is not a set pattern for black women and that the layout represents this. Also, the layout is random and unique and thats what she wants black women to be perceived as instead as being in a set pattern and categorised. Grace Nichols repeats several thing throughout her poem. of a black woman or a white woman or a green woman is repeated a l ot to emphasize the point that all races are equal and it doesnt depend on colour for how we are treated. She also repeats the phrase crushing out with each dancing step to make her point that you shouldnt judge people by their past and that you should blockade about you and your ancestors history and create new history. I think Grace Nichols used Creole to emphasize how she is proud of her culture and that black women should be proud as well and celebrate their own culture. I think these poems differ in messages and tones as Maya Angelous poem still I rise her message is that black women should be proud about their culture and to be black and that Maya Angelou wants to change the perception of black women so that it is not the typical lave image but it is more sexy and elegant. Also, I think Maya Angelou was lively and spirited throughout most of her poem, although she had some accusatory tone and interrogative mode. However, Grace Nicholss message was different from Maya Angelous a s Grace Nichols wanted black women to be treated fairly and equally as any other race are and that she doesnt think its right to define black women all in one category. Also, she didnt think it was right to be asked to write a poem about how black women feel living in todays society as it is no different from any other race woman.Grace Nicholss tone throughout was mainly accusatory and angry. In some ways the two poems are similar as they both feel that their race should not be treated as slave just because some of their ancestors were in captivity as slaves in past history. Also, they both feel that their race should now think about the present and not focus on the past and believe you should forget about slavery and the past. They both also want black people to celebrate their culture.I think Grace Nicholss poem portrays the black race better as Maya Angelou categorises the black race even though they are all individuals and cant be put into just one category. Whereas, Grace Nicho ls says all the way through her poem that black people are individuals and all unique and you cant categorise them. Also, I think Grace Nichols write not just about the good things about being a black woman, but she also write about the bad things, whereas, Maya Angelou doesnt.

The Darwinian revolution challenged Essay Example for Free

The Darwinian variety challenged EssayDefine growing broadly and hence give a narrower definition, as discussed in the overview. Evolution Descent with change the idea that life species be descendants of ancestral species that were different from the present-day ones overly defined more narrowly as the change in the genetic composition of a population from generation to generation Concept 22.1 The Darwinian revolution challenged the traditional view of a young populace inhabited by unchanging species This section takes a look at the historical setting and influences on Darwin, and it sets the stage for our formal study of evolution. How did each of the following sources view the origin of species? Aristotle and Scala Naturae Aristotle viewed species as fixed. Through his observations of nature, Aristotle recognized affinities among organisms. He concluded that life-forms could be arranged on a ladder, or scale, of increasing complexity, called the scala naturae. Each fo rm, perfect and permanent, had its allotted rung on this ladder. The Old Testament The Old Testament holds that species were individually designed by God and therefore perfect.Carolus Linnaeus Linnaeus adopted a nested classification system, grouping similar species into increasingly general categories. Linnaeus, adhering tothe Old Testament belief that all species were designed by God, did not ascribe the resemblances among species to evolutionary kinship, but rather to the exemplar of their population. justify the role of fossils in rock strata as a window to life in earlier sentences. Many fossils are found in positary rocks formed from the sand and mud that settle to the bottom of seas, lakes, swamps, and other aquatic habitats. New layers of sediment cover older ones and compress them into superimposed layers of rock called strata. The fossils in particular strata provide a glimpse of some of the organisms that populated Earth at the judgment of conviction that the layer fo rmed. How would Georges Cuvier have explained the appearance of the record of life shown in the rock strata? Cuvier opposed the idea of evolution. He advocated catastrophism, the principle that events in the past occurred suddenly and were ca apply by mechanisms different from those operating in the present.Copyright 2011 Pearson Education, Inc.Cuvier speculated that each boundary between strata represented a catastrophe, much(prenominal) as a flood, that had destroyed many of the species living at that time. James Hutton and Charles Lyell were geologists whose ideas strongly influenced Darwins thinking. What were the ideas each of them contributed? James Hutton Hutton proposed that Earths geologic features could be explained by gradual mechanisms still operating today, such as valley formed by rivers. Charles Lyell Lyell incorporated Huttons thinking into his principle of uniformitarianism, which states that mechanisms of change are constant over time. Lyell proposed that the sa me geologic processes are operating today as in the past, and at the same rate. What is the importance of the principle of uniformitarianism? If geologic change results from slow, continuous actions rather than from sudden events, then Earth must be much older than the widely accepted age of a few thousand years.Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck proposed a mechanism for how life changes over time. Explain the two principles of his mechanism. use and disuse The idea that parts of the body that are used extensively become larger and stronger, while those that are not used deteriorate. inheritance of acquired characteristics This idea states that an organism could pass these modifications of use and disuse to its payoff.Although Lamarcks mechanism of evolution does not explain the changes in species over time, his thinking has been influential. What is considered to be the great importance of his ideas? Lamarck recognized that the match of organisms to their environments can be explained by gra dual evolutionary change rather than special creation.Concept 22.2 Descent with modification by immanent selection explains the adaptations of organisms and the unity and diversity of life Charles Darwin proposed that the mechanism of evolution is natural selection and that it explains how adaptations arise. What are adaptations? Give two examples of adaptations. Adaptations are catching characteristics of organisms that enhance their choice and reproduction in specific environments. Possible examples include the mottled coloration of a fawn that allows it to blend with its environment, or the sharp talons and beaks of birds of feed so well suited for predation.Explain the process of natural selection. In the process of natural selection, individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and be sick at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits. permits try to summarize Darwins observations that drive changes in species over timeObservation1. Varia tions in traits exist.Cite an ExampleVariation in color and spot pattern of Asian ladybirdbeetles2. These variations (traits) are heritable. Variation in closely related species of elephants offspring resemble close relatives more than other members of apopulation.3. Species overproduce.Dandelions produce thousands of seeds.4. There is competition for resourcesnot all offspring survive. Not all dandelion seeds stock or survive to maturityFrom these four observations, what two inferences did Darwin make? 1. Individuals whose inherited traits give them a higher probability of surviving and reproducing in a disposed environment tend to leave more offspring than other individuals. 2. The unequal ability of individuals to survive and reproduce will lead to the accumulation of favorable traits in the population over generations. It is important to remember that differences in heritable traits can lead to differential reproductive success. This means that the individuals who have the neces sary traits to promote survival in the current environment will leave the most offspring. How can this differential reproductive success affect the match between organisms and their environment? When such advantages increase the number of offspring that survive and reproduce, the traits that are favored will give carely appear at a greater frequency in the near generation. To demonstrate your understanding of this section, complete the following sentences Individuals do not evolve. Populations evolve. Now, take out your highlighter and mark the information in the box above. Hold these ideas firmly in your brain Finally, if you are ever asked to explain Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection (a common AP essayquestion), do not rip out the phrase survival of the fittest. Instead, cite the points made in question 11 and explain the inferences that are drawn from them.Copyright 2011 Pearson Education, Inc.Concept 22.3 Evolution is support by an overwhelming amount of scienti fic evidence 15.Use Figure 22.13 in your text to explain how research with soapberry bugs demonstrated observable evolutionary change.Museum specimens showed that the average beak length of soapberry bugs was comparable to that of soapberry bugs feeding on native species in southern Florida. However, contemporary data suggest that a change in the size of the soapberry bugs food source, as seen with the introduction of the goldenrain guide, can result in evolution by natural selection for matching beak size.MRSA is in the news today because it is becoming increasingly more common. What is it? MRSA is methicillin- revolting Staphylococcus aureus, a flesh-eating strain How did it become so dangerous? Explain the evolution of MRSAs resistance to methicillin. MRSA became dangerous because, over time, doctors used a variety of antibiotics, such as penicillin, to combat MRSA. Each time a new antibiotic was used to fight the disease, some S. aureus populations would develop resistance to t he new drug. In 1959, doctors used the powerful antibiotic methicillin. Members of the S. aureus population that were resistant to methicillin reproduced at higher rates, leading to the spread of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).Do antibiotics cause bacteria to become resistant? Explain your response. No. A drug does not execute resistant pathogens it selects for resistant individuals that are already present in the population.Lets make a list of the four evidences for evolution that are set forth in this concept. Give an example of each.Evidence for EvolutionExampleDirect observations ofevolutionary changeHomologyPossible examples include the evolution of MRSA or the change in beak size in soapberry bugs.Possible examples include the similarities between mammalian forelimbs.Possible examples include fossils that show ancestors of cetaceans had hind limbs.Possible examples include the creation of the evolutionary tree of horses, based on fossil locations.Fossil recordBiogeog raphyHow does the fossil record give evidence for evolution? The fossil record documents the pattern of evolution, showing that past organisms differed from present-day organisms and that many species havebecome extinct.Copyright 2011 Pearson Education, Inc.What is meant by each of the following terms? Give an example of each.Term homologic structuresVestigial structuresAnalogous structures(see p. 465)Explanation/ExampleStructures in different species that are similar because of common ancestry. For example, mammalian forelimbs.A feature of an organism that is a historical remnant of a structure that served a function in the organisms ancestors. For example, skeletons of some snakes retain vestiges of the pelvis and leg bones.Having characteristics that are similar because of focused evolution, not homology. For example, the wing of a butterfly and wing of a bat both make flight possible. How do homologous structures give evidence for evolution?Homologous structures represent variat ions on a structural theme that was present in the common ancestors of a species. What is summarized in an evolutionary tree?An evolutionary tree reflects evolutionary relationships among groups of organisms.Figure 22.17 in your text shows an evolutionary tree. What is indicated by each start point in the following figure? Mark each branch point. Each branch point represents the common ancestors of the lineage beginning there and to the right of it. Refer to Figure 22.17 on page 464.What is indicated by the hatch mark in Figure 22.17?A hatch mark represents a homologous characteristic shared by all the groups to the right of the mark.Use the tree in question 24 to answer this question Are crocodiles more closely related to lizards or to birds? Explain your response.Based on this evolutionary tree, crocodiles are more closely related to birds than to lizards because they share a more common ancestor with the birds than with lizards. On the evolutionary tree, label the vertical lines t o the right, and annotate the key feature that label each group.See page 464 of your text for the labeled figure.Organisms that are only distantly related can resemble each other. Explain convergent evolution, and discern how analogous structures can arise.Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar features indifferent lineages. In such examples as the marsupials of Australia, in which species share features because of convergent evolution, the resemblance is said to be analogous. Analogous features share similar function, but not common ancestry.Copyright 2011 Pearson Education, Inc.Convergent evolution might be summarized like this Similar problem, similar solution. Can you give two examples of convergent evolution?Answers will vary but may include the sugar glider and the speedy squirrel, and the evolution of wings in birds and bats.Study TipHomologous structures show evidence of relatedness (whale fin, bat wing). Analogous structures are similar solutions t o similar problems but do not indicate close relatedness (bird wing, butterfly wing). What is biogeography? How is it affected by continental drift and the presence of endemic species?Biogeography is the geographic distribution of species. The geographic distribution of organisms is influenced by many factors, including continental drift, the slow movement of Earths movement over time, and the presence of endemic species, species that are found nowhere else in the world.Lets wrap up all of these ideas with a final summary.ORGANIZE YOUR THOUGHTSEvolution is change in species over time.Heritable variations exist within a population. These variations can result in differential reproductive success. Over generations, this can result in changes in the genetic composition of the population. And remember Individuals do not evolve Populations evolve.Test Your Understanding AnswersNow you should be ready to test your knowledge.
